8:13Now PlayingRebecca Grant, vice president of the Lexington Institute, said that the US decision to send a naval strike group including aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford to Latin America 'extends the options' the Trump administration has in its campaign on Venezuela.
The US is sending a naval strike group including its most modern aircraft carrier to Latin America, sharply escalating a military campaign that’s targeted drug cartels and unsettled governments in the region.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group to the region to “bolster U.S. capacity to detect, monitor, and disrupt illicit actors and activities that compromise the safety and prosperity of the United States homeland and our security in the Western Hemisphere,” spokesman Sean Parnell said on social media.
The Trump administration’s military operation in the region has killed 43 people in 10 strikes on small boats that officials alleged were carrying narcotics. President Donald Trump has threatened to broaden the efforts to include land assaults, but suggested congressional approval might be needed.
The Ford was in the Mediterranean Sea earlier this month, according to pictures posted by the US military. The Croatian government welcomed the carrier to Split on Oct. 21.
