4:10Now PlayingNew Jersey authorities responded to bomb threats at polling stations in seven counties, prompting temporary closures as voting began, according to state Attorney General Matthew Platkin.
The threats, which were emailed, involved polling places in Bergen, Essex, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Passaic counties. Law enforcement was deployed to each location and secured the sites, Platkin said in a statement.
Some polling places have been reopened, while voters at others were directed to nearby sites to cast ballots. State officials are coordinating with federal and local agencies, and Platkin urged voters to continue participating in the election. Voters in New Jersey will decide Tuesday on a new governor, with Representative Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, facing off against former state assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli. A Fox News poll of likely voters published Oct. 30 found Sherrill leading by seven points.
“We will not tolerate any attempts to interfere with our elections, and we will swiftly hold accountable anyone who seeks to interfere with the safety or security of our electoral process,” Platkin said. He added there is no indication the threats were credible.
