President Donald Trump championed US attacks on Venezuelan vessels during a speech at a business event Wednesday in Miami, in his latest saber-rattling toward the regime of President Nicolas Maduro.
“We’re blowing up cartel terrorists. We’re blowing them up — linked to the Maduro regime in Venezuela and others,” Trump said at the America Business Forum. “Venezuela emptied their prisons into our country. Nobody wants that. They emptied their prisons into our country.”
Trump has repeatedly struck vessels in Caribbean and Pacific waters, claiming that the operations are killing narco-terrorists funneling drugs into the US. The decision to use military force rather than law enforcement to address the smuggling — and suggestions the White House could expand the campaign to include land targets — has drawn bipartisan questions and criticism.
Trump on Wednesday defended the action, saying that every drug boat that arrived on US shores “kills 25,000 Americans.”
“Every time we hit a boat, we save 25,000 lives. Got to look at it that way,” Trump said.
Asked last week whether land strikes on Venezuela were imminent, Trump denied that he was considering such attacks, but then replied “no” again when asked if he had decided on the matter.
Trump’s comments follow a post by his Pentagon chief on Tuesday that claimed the US struck another vessel in international waters in the Eastern Pacific, killing two while no US personnel were harmed. “We will find and terminate EVERY vessel with the intention of trafficking drugs to America to poison our citizens,” Pete Hegseth said in the social media post.
