Michael Allen, head of Beacon Global Strategies, says that while President Trump has a range of options around how to proceed with further military strikes against Venezuela, he believes that the US will stick to air strikes and not attempt to go in on the ground.

enezuela is rounding up dissidents and urging citizens to spy on their neighbors as the approach of a US aircraft carrier strike group puts the country on edge.

Amid fears of an imminent US attack, President Nicolás Maduro on Thursday extended nationwide military drills involving 200,000 soldiers. Earlier in the week, ruling-party strongman Diosdado Cabello urged Venezuelans to use their phones to report suspicious activities to the government.

“We tell the American empire not to dare: we are prepared,” Foreign Minister Yván Gil said Thursday, at an event in Caracas.

The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, arrived in the region on Tuesday, sparking fears in the Maduro regime that the US may be about to strike targets in Venezuela. In recent weeks, Washington has built up its forces in the Southern Caribbean, and blown up vessels near Venezuela’s coast which were suspected of trafficking drugs.
