Anna Ashton, a former Defense Department analyst, said a deal to let Saudi Arabia buy advanced artificial intelligence chips from the US will change China's strategy in the region, where it's invested heavily in building digital infrastructure.

Six months ago, Saudi Arabia unveiled a new artificial intelligence firm called Humain that promised to wield the kingdom’s immense resources and become a powerhouse investor in the AI sector. Now, Humain is going on a dealmaking spree.

The Saudi entity has led a $900 million financing round in Luma AI, an AI video generation startup based in California, the companies announced Wednesday. The venture unit of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Andreessen Horowitz also participated in the round, which values Luma at $4 billion.

Luma will also be the anchor customer for a large Humain data center campus in Saudi Arabia, which is planned to eventually reach 2 gigawatts of capacity, the companies said on Wednesday. A single gigawatt is enough to power roughly 750,000 US homes on average.

Separately, Humain announced that it was forming a joint venture with AMD and Cisco Systems Inc. to build up to a gigawatt of data center capacity in the kingdom. In an interview, Humain Chief Executive Officer Tareq Amin described this as an effort to build a “CoreWeave for the Middle East” — a reference to the primary neocloud company that rents out access to AI chips.
