8:21Now PlayingTwo National Guardsmen were shot and critically wounded in downtown Washington and a suspect is in custody, officials said Wednesday.
The scene is secured and one person has been arrested, DC Metropolitan Police said in a social media post.
Emergency vehicles were seen responding to the area around 17th and I Streets Northwest, which is about two blocks from the White House.
President Donald Trump, who is in Florida, said on social media the suspect was “severely wounded” and “will pay a very steep price.”
Trump deployed the National Guard in Washington in August, saying they were needed to support federal and DC law enforcement. Their deployment was recently ruled illegal by a federal judge, although guardsmen were not required to leave the District immediately to allow time for appeal.
