The cloud-computing giant will become the first customer for copper produced using Rio’s Nuton bioleaching technology, the mining company said in a statement Thursday, without providing terms.
The arrangement underscores copper’s importance in everything from renewable power to artificial intelligence, with analysts warning of a looming supply squeeze as producers struggle to meet demand growth. As prices surge to records, Rio has resumed talks to buy Glencore Plc — largely for its copper assets.
Under a two-year agreement, AWS will use copper from Gunnison Copper Corp.’s Johnson Camp mine, where Rio’s Nuton is a strategic partner. AWS will also supply cloud-based data and analytics to help optimize the Nuton technology’s performance.
Rio rose as much as 1.2% in London trading.
Nuton uses microorganisms to extract copper from sulfide ores in a method that removes the need for polluting concentrators, smelters and refineries. For Rio, AWS’s backing offers a high-profile validation of the technology as it looks to scale production.
Other major copper producers, including BHP Group and Antofagasta Plc, are pushing to develop sulfide leaching technology as well. . He speaks with Carol Massar and Tim Stenovec.
