YouTube Description
as posted by the channelJPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon told Bloomberg's David Rubenstein that there was 'no chance' he would take up the role of chair of the Federal Reserve, but would consider taking on the Treasury if the president asked him to serve as secretary. However, he joked that he might like being his own boss too much to take the role. Dimon also weighed in on questions around the Fed's role, saying that chipping away at Fed independence drives rates higher.
In the Wall Street-to-Washington corridor, the prospect of Jamie Dimon for Treasury secretary, or even for president, has come up repeatedly over the years.
The longtime JPMorgan Chase & Co. chief executive officer draws the line at Dimon for Federal Reserve Chair.
“Chairman of the Fed, I’d put in the absolutely, positively no chance, no way, no how, for any reason,” Dimon said Thursday at an event held by the US Chamber of Commerce, in response to a question on whether he’d consider the role. As for running the US Treasury, “I would take the call,” he said.
Dimon’s comments follow a public back-and-forth between him and President Donald Trump earlier this week over the administration’s latest attacks on the central bank. The CEO said Tuesday that chipping away at Fed independence is “not a great idea,” and could lead to higher inflation and interest rates over time.
Later the same day, when asked about Dimon’s remarks, Trump said “I think he’s wrong.”
But Dimon doubled down on Thursday.
“Everyone I know, including the president of the United States, says we need an independent Fed board,” Dimon said. “Most people I know, including the president of the United States, speak up about their opinion, which they’re free to do.”
