The petition would force a vote on legislation to reopen DHS without funding for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement if it gathers 218 signatures, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced Monday. Democrats have demanded changes to immigration enforcement policy in any DHS funding bill, though there’s been little to no progress on their negotiations with Republicans and the White House. The partial shutdown of the department has dragged on for more than a month.
House Appropriations Committee ranking member Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) will launch the petition Wednesday, Jeffries (D-N.Y.) wrote in a letter to Democratic lawmakers.
“The extreme Republican policy of mass deportation has resulted in the cold-blooded killing of two American citizens and the wasting of billions of taxpayer dollars to brutalize communities throughout the country. This must end,” Jeffries said.
