USAID gutted. ICE raids tearing through communities. Universities and law firms bowing to executive pressure. NATO allies sidelined while the administration cozies up to Orbán and Putin. Vaccine policy dismantled. A Justice Department turned into a weapon for revenge and corrupt pardons. When a government turns evil, what do you actually do — and what's just performance that makes you feel better without changing anything?

Gal Beckerman, staff writer at The Atlantic and author of the new book How to Be a Dissident, joins Worth Knowing to work through it. Beckerman studied dissidents across history — Solzhenitsyn, Diogenes, Ai Weiwei, Alexei Navalny — to figure out what actually separates real moral action from empty gestures. We get into political humor as resistance, the psychology experiments (Milgram, the Stanford Prison Experiment, Asch conformity) that explain why so many people fall in line under authoritarian pressure, and what it really means to choose speaking out over silence when there's a cost to it.
