Iran gov’t gives out universal food vouchers after inflation drives up prices

Following protests over inflation in January, the Iranian government eliminated preferential dollar rates for importers, diverting those funds into a universal food voucher program. This program has become essential for maintaining economic stability during the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

Every Iranian citizen qualifies for the program, which allocates one million toman (about $7 USD) per person each month. Six eggs cost about $1. A whole fish takes up about half the voucher. Items like red meat and premium basmati rice take up the whole voucher.

The voucher covers essential food items such as rice, legumes, pasta, chicken, fish, meat, sugar, dairy and oil. Select supermarkets, butchers, and some family-owned bodegas accept the voucher.
