Cuba is living through the most intense energy crisis in its history: This week the national grid collapsed for the fifth time this year – the third total blackout in just ten days – plunging all ten million people on the island into darkness. This is not a natural disaster and it's not mismanagement: This deadly crisis “has literally been the intended impact of the US blockade,” says Manolo de los Santos, executive director of The People’s Forum and a researcher at Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research. And it’s been building for decades, including the more than 240 sanctions imposed under Trump’s first presidency that rendered Havana unable to fully restore its electrical grid.
