Borealis asks whether a recent Greek court decision to convict the far right Golden Dawn as a criminal organisation rather than a terrorist one has lessons for all of us.

Court Sentences Leaders of Greece’s #GoldenDawn to Prison. The neofascist party’s leaders were convicted of running a criminal organization, and some of its members were found guilty of acts of violence. An Athens court sentenced the leaders of Greece’s Golden Dawn party to 13 years in prison on Wednesday, a week after declaring the neofascist party a criminal organization in a landmark verdict that wrapped up one of the most important political trials in the country’s modern history. Last week, the court convicted the party leaders of crimes related to a campaign of attacks against migrants and leftist critics in 2012 and 2013. At the end of a trial that lasted more than five years, the party was tied to a string of attacks, including the fatal stabbing in 2013 of a leftwing rapper, Pavlos Fyssas.

Big crowds gathered outside the court in Athens as the judges gave verdicts on 68 defendants. Golden Dawn secured 18 MPs in 2012, as Greeks were battered by a financial crisis. The criminal inquiry into the party began with the murder of an antifascist musician in 2013. Leader Nikos Michaloliakos and six colleagues were convicted of heading a criminal group.
