Shortly after departing Los Angeles International Airport, Delta Flight 958 found itself on a collision course with SkyWest 231E after apparently deviating from its assigned departure routing. Air Traffic Control quickly recognized the conflict and issued urgent instructions to restore separation between the two aircraft. Publicly available ATC audio and flight tracking data suggest this incident could have become much more serious had multiple layers of aviation safety not worked exactly as designed.
