A Kalitta Air Boeing 777-300ER produced a dramatic shower of sparks when its tail scraped the runway during a go-around at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
Kalitta Air Flight 264 had arrived from Brussels when the crew discontinued the landing and attempted to climb away. During the maneuver, the aircraft reached an unusually high nose-up attitude and its tail contacted the runway.
Retired airline captain Captain Steeeve breaks down the footage, explains how a tail strike can occur, examines the challenges of executing a go-around after touchdown and discusses what investigators will likely be looking at—including aircraft configuration, pitch inputs, airspeed and the timing of the maneuver.
The aircraft subsequently landed safely, and no injuries were reported. The FAA is investigating the incident, so the exact cause has not yet been officially determined.
