Last year, Imamoglu won a second term as Istanbul's mayor, when his party swept local elections. It was the first time Erdogan's party was defeated across the country in his 22 year presidency.
His arrest comes just days before he was due to be selected by the opposition Republican People's Party as their presidential candidate to run against Erdogan.
Turkey's government denied any involvement in the arrests.
