Later Number 10 said "new information" had emerged in September which showed the "depth and extent" of Mandelson's relationship with Epstein was "materially different" from what he had claimed, and so he was sacked.
The prime minister started the day promising to publish some material about the vetting and appointment of Mandelson as ambassador to the US - an appointment Starmer now says he regrets.
But Labour anger over the vetting process, and the prime minister's handling of the appointment, is only growing.
With by-elections and elections coming, and some Labour MPs now calling for him to go, can the Keir Starmer somehow turn his Premiership around?
