US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the ship "thought it was safe in International waters instead it was sunk by a torpedo - quiet death".
The Sri Lankan military were able to rescue at least 30 people on board after a distress call was made.
Injured sailors were taken to a nearby hospital.
It comes as the war between the US, Israel and Iran continues to escalate.
