The growing conflict has stopped more ships passing the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran claiming the agreement gave it control of all passage until a final deal is negotiated and the Americans trying to open up the route on the Omani side of the water without coordinating with Tehran.
It is all a battle over who goes into the next stage of talks in the dominant position with Iran knowing that if it allows traffic to pass without its control the payment mechanism it wants to introduce will be doomed.
But the prospect of a return to war didn't stop large crowds turning out in the holy city of Mashhad for the former supreme leader's funeral.
