At least three helicopters are understood to have been deployed, alongside a heavy police, ambulance and RNLI presence.
Tom Rutland, the Labour MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, has urged people to "stay clear of the area around Shoreham Fort and Kingston Beach as emergency services respond to reports of several people in difficulty in the water there". A section of the A259 has been closed, Rutland said in a post on X.
