As at the time of the meeting, it was less than 500 days remaining to meet the MDGs target date.
At the Assembly, President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria focused on the sustainable development goals.
"If the MDGs are to drive development and also meet the aspirations of developing countries, for poverty elimination and sustainable growth, collective ownership of the emerging process must be our priority.
"For us in Africa, our expectation is that the new MDGs will be people centred. They must promote peace and security, structural economic transformation, inclusive growth, sure security for all, environmental sustainability and shared benefits from science and technology," he said.
World leaders all made commitment at the climate change summit convened by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.
"To is a historic day. "Never before have such number of world leaders gathered to make commitments to climate change," Mr Ban said.
