0:55Now PlayingThis segment looks at how other countries have succeeded in transforming prisons to correctional facilities while ensuring the inmates get fulfilled experience.
South Africa rehabilitates its inmates through victim-offender dialogue where both parties talk over the effects of a crime so that forgiveness can be sought, and relationships restored.
In Denmark, rehabilitation is the focus of the prison system, it seeks to solve problems that lead to a crime rather than punishing the criminal. Danish prisoners attend classes and workshops. Those with sentences shorter than five years live in open prisons without walls and common security features.
Norway has moved away from a punitive ''lock-up'' approach and this has drastically reduced the re-offending rate. Prison officials are trained to serve as mentors and role models to prisoners. Both guards and inmates dine and enjoy leisure activities together.
