Since then, international security patrols in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean shipping lane have significantly reduced piracy.
However, in the past year, these efforts have been strained as Houthi rebels from Yemen began targeting ships across the Gulf of Aden. Recently, there has been a resurgence of piracy off the coast of Puntland, in Somalia's autonomous region.
BBC Africa traveled to the area to speak exclusively with some of the pirates involved.
