YouTube Description
as posted by the channelThe Pan-American Highway spans 30,000 kilometers from Alaska to Argentina—except for one brutal break: the Darién Gap. This is a 106 kilometre gap of dense jungle and is one of the last great untamed places on earth. This green hell blocked Spanish conquistadors, Scottish colonists, and even modern American engineers. There isn’t a single road through this 30,000km2 wall of mountains and rainforest that can only be traversed by foot and canoe. It's one of the wettest places on Earth and movement is blocked by towering mud caked mountains, hundreds of swiftly flooding rivers, snakes, crocodiles, mosquitoes carrying dengue and malaria, narco traffickers, anti-government guerillas, and a place called Death Mountain. For centuries only a handful of people crossed the Darién per year.
But in 2024 about 800,000 migrants tried to cross the Gap, a 31,000% increase compared to 2010. They are fleeing crises in Venezuela, Haiti, and Ecuador. Many of them never made it out of the jungle.
