The Berm slices through Western Sahara, a place maps can’t even agree exists.
Beneath its sands lie some of Earth’s largest deposits of phosphate, desperately needed to fertilise the world’s farms. Its fishing waters feed European markets. Its wind and sun power distant cities, all without the consent of the local people.
Fifty years ago, Spain promised the people here a vote to choose their future.
Instead this land was invaded
The vote never happened.
