Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) took to X, formerly twitter, on Monday to advocate for a buyback initiative targeting AR-15s and firearms demonized as "assault weapons" by Democrats.
He additionally proposed the implementation of a ban that would prevent the future manufacture and sale of AR-15s.
In his post, Swalwell tweeted (or x'd), "Ban assault weapons. Buy them ALL back. Choose our kids over their killers."
The assailant responsible for the incident at the Jacksonville Dollar General on Saturday had utilized both a Glock handgun and an AR-15-style rifle. Consequently, enforcing a ban solely on the rifle would not have averted the occurrence of the attack.
FBI statistics reveal that in 2021, more fatalities were attributed to knives and cutting tools than to rifles, exceeding the rifle-related death toll by more than two-fold.
Furthermore, the same FBI data underscores that in 2021, more lives were claimed by beatings inflicted with fists and feet than by rifle-related incidents.
