A subway passenger, 43 year-old John Rote, is under arrest after he fired two rounds at a subway robber who was reportedly trying to rob a woman on a Manhattan subway platform.
The situation unfolded when Rote observed 49-year-old Matthew Roesch holding open an emergency gate, only to demand money from a woman before allowing her entry onto the subway. Authorities reported that as the woman tried to bypass Roesch, he confronted her, stating, "If you don't give me a dollar, I'm going to take your purse."
Upon witnessing this confrontation, Rote immediately shouted, "Get away from her!" and eventually fired two rounds down the platform.
In defense of his actions, Rote's attorney, Marie Calvert-Kilbane, stated that Rote has been a legal owner of the firearm for 13 years.
News around New York posed headline questions of "Subway vigilante or hero?"
The president of the transit authority stated that, "weapons shouldn't be on the streets of New York" and that New York needs to get a handle on the gun issues in the city alluding to law abiding citizens carrying guns to defend themselves.
Despite having no prior criminal record, Rote is now facing charges, including "criminal possession of a weapon and menacing." If convicted, he could be sentenced to three and a half years in prison.
When people take their safety against criminals into their own hands as a result, the government treats the good Samaritan more like a criminal than the actual criminals.
Whether you like it or not, you are you're own first responder. No one is coming to save you and apparently even if someone does come to save you, if that person uses a gun to do it, the government in New York is saying they are going to treat that person like a criminal.
