Carrying A Gun In Shorts Is Trickier Than You Think

Summer hits, the pants come off, and half the gun community starts carrying a loaded gun off a drawstring.

I’m in that number too.

Carrying in shorts, joggers, or sweats is absolutely doable, but you need to understand what you’re giving up when you don’t have a real belt.

The drawstring is now doing two jobs: holding up your shorts and sitting near your trigger guard. Unlike a belt, it moves. It flops around. It shifts when you sit, stand, drive, and reholster.

One loose end finds its way into the wrong place, and you just built a negligent discharge out of a shoelace.

The draw is different too. With a real belt, the belt holds the holster while the gun comes out. With shorts, the whole system wants to come with the gun. You’re relying on friction, the holster clip, the drawstring, and the fit of the shorts to make everything work.

That means you need to test your setup unloaded before you trust it loaded.

Draw it. Sit with it. Stand with it. Get in and out of the car. Run with it. Reholster slowly. Find the failure points while the stakes are zero.

Carry in your shorts.

Just don’t carry on luck.
