8:42:02Now PlayingLIVE: The Tupac Shakur murder trial begins in Las Vegas.
Crime Talk is live for Day 1 of opening statements in Nevada v. Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the long-awaited murder trial stemming from the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed rap icon Tupac Shakur.
Nearly 30 years after Shakur was fatally shot near the Las Vegas Strip, prosecutors will begin laying out their case against Davis, whom they accuse of helping organize the retaliatory attack. Davis has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors do not need to prove that Davis personally fired the fatal shots; their case alleges that he participated in and helped orchestrate the killing.
The case is expected to focus heavily on statements Davis made over the years about the shooting, including interviews, his memoir Compton Street Legend, and a 2008 law-enforcement interview that the judge ruled may be used at trial. The defense has argued that some of Davis’ public accounts were exaggerated or fabricated for publicity and financial gain.
Today, the prosecution is expected to deliver its opening statement and begin explaining what it believes happened on the night Tupac was shot. The defense will have an opportunity to present its own opening statement as this historic murder case finally reaches a jury.
