California began issuing such taxes in July, and at least 15 other states have imposed the tax or are considering doing so. To create an even playing field among the states, Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Mike Enzi (R-WY) are working on legislation requiring retailers who sell on the internet to collect sales taxes.
