9:02Now PlayingSince January 2005, there has been an effort to restore George Washington's Upper Garden at Mount Vernon to its 1799 appearance. We visited Mount Vernon, and spoke with special collections librarian Michele Lee, director of archeology Esther White, and director of horticulture Dean Norton.
First, we heard from Michele Lee about several documents in Mount Vernon's collection -- some in Washington's own hand -- that provide a glimpse into Washington's gardening practices.
From the library, we moved out to the Upper Garden where archeologist Esther White and horticulturist Dean Norton walked us through the work they directed in the garden's reinterpretation.
George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens is open every day of the year.
