1:48Now PlayingRobert Smalls was a slave who commandeered a Confederate transport ship in Charleston Harbor, piloted it to a Union blockade, and then surrendered the unexpected prize to a federal ship. During Reconstruction, Robert Smalls served South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives, working to pass civil rights legislation and fighting for equality in the armed forces. On the 150th anniversary of Smalls' escape with his wife, children and 12 other slaves, one of his descendants participated in a discussion about his life and exploits.
