Dr. Hassan Tetteh talked about his book, "Gifts of the Heart", a fictional story of a military physician in Afghanistan. He suggested that portions of his life story are mirrored through the characters. Dr. Tetteh described participating in surgery to remove a heart from a traumatic automobile accident victim in the Midwest, and accompanying the organ to the Washington, D.C., area for transplant surgery. He explained how a heart transplant actually work and the amount of time needed for a successful heart transplant operation. He detailed his own childhood growing up in Brooklyn, his acceptance to medical school, and his time as a U.S. Navy commander. He talked about his time in Afghanistan and on the USS Carl Vinson.
