Hubbell was instrumental in the development of Iowa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He built the 110-mile Des Moines North Western Railway and founded the Equitable Life Insurance Company of Iowa, the first life insurance company west of the Mississippi. Insurance is still a central part of Iowa's economy to this day.
