1:06Now PlayingSam Houston State University professor Brian Matthew Jordan teaches a class about the 1864 Civil War Overland Campaign in Virginia. It pitted Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant against the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee. The campaign ended with Lee's army bottled up in Petersburg, just south of the Confederate capital of Richmond. The siege lasted more than nine months until Lee was forced to abandon his fortifications, leading to his surrender at Appomattox Courthouse.
