Washington Today (6-2-25): Senate to take up reconciliation bill; reax to Boulder antisemitic attack

The Senate is back in town today and ready to take up the Republicans' budget reconciliation bill. It's the same bill the House passed before Memorial Day weekend, but it faces a possibly rocky path in the Senate. That's because several Republican Senators have already said they oppose the bill's changes to Medicaid. Several non-partisan and independent projections show that it would cause millions of Americans to lose their health coverage. Other Senators are concerned about what the bill's tax provisions could do to the national debt and deficit. We will hear from Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

The suspect in Sunday's attack in Boulder, Colorado appeared in court today. He's been charged with 16 counts of attempted murder, plus a federal hate crime. According to an affidavit, Mohammed Soliman told investigators he “wanted to kill all Zionist people” and said, “he would do it again." He said he knew about the Jewish group's Sunday meetings and that he had planned the attack for a year. We'll hear from Gov. Jared Polis (D-C), Sens. Michael Bennet (D-CO) and John Hickenlooper (D-CO), and White House reaction.

Russian and Ukrainian delegates met in Istanbul today for a second set of direct peace talks. Their meeting comes after Ukraine's drone attack on Russian bombers. Media reports say the talks between the two sides lasted barely over an hour and that outside of an agreement to work on a new prisoner exchange little progress was made. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky talked about the attacks at a conference in Lithuania today.
