1:48Now PlayingPresident Trump on Friday said he never asked Kevin Warsh whether he would commit to cutting interest rates before nominating him to be the next Federal Reserve chair.
“No, but we talk about it. I’ve been following him. And I don’t want to ask him that question,” the president told reporters. “But he certainly wants to cut rates.”
President Trump has repeatedly pressured the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates more aggressively, a campaign that has raised concerns about the independence of the central bank.
The president praised his new pick as “very smart, very good, strong, young” and “the central casting guy that people wanted.”
“I would say that this was the, you know, perfect candidate,” he added. “This was not a surprise or anything. This was the man that’s most qualified, top student, best schools ... got the whole package. Looks don’t mean anything, but he’s got the look.”
