2:18Now PlayingSupreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts said Tuesday that while scrutiny of the high court and its decisions is warranted, personal criticisms and hostility toward justices have become dangerous.
"The problem, sometimes, is that the criticism can move from a focus on legal analysis to personalities," he said during an interview at Rice University in Texas. "Personally directed hostility is dangerous, and it's got to stop."
U.S. District Court Judge Lee Rosenthal, who conducted the interview, thanked Chief Justice Roberts for his comments in defense of the judiciary as personal attacks and threats of violence have risen.
"On behalf of trial judges everywhere, we want to personally thank you," she told him. "While we know that you may not always agree with us, we know that you have our backs."
