1:43Now PlayingPresident Trump on Sunday renewed his call for Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster to pass Homeland Security Department funding and the SAVE America Act, even as Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) lacks the votes to do so.
“I like him so much, he’s a high-quality person. And he told me the same thing, ‘we don’t have the votes.’ Well, he’s only a couple of votes short. But that’s what being a leader is. You have to get the votes,” the president told reporters aboard Air Force One.
Changing the Senate’s filibuster rules would require 51 votes, but many GOP senators are reluctant to eliminate the 60-vote threshold to pass most legislation, warning it would fundamentally change the institution and could come back to haunt them when Democrats retake the chamber.
