Wright: “I don’t know the future of energy prices”

Energy Secretary Chris Wright declined to offer a prediction on energy prices Tuesday, a day after President Trump rebuked him for saying he did not believe gas prices would fall below $3 per gallon until 2027.

“I don’t know the future of energy prices,” he told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. “Often, I will speculate or look at those things. I would say gasoline prices looks like they peaked about a week or so ago, $1 a gallon cheaper than they peaked during the Biden administration. Yet we’re in the midst of ending a 47-year conflict in the Middle East, a major energy producing region.”

In an interview with CNN on Sunday, the Energy secretary said gas prices, which have skyrocketed amid the Iran war, might not fall below $3 a gallon again until 2027 — after the midterm elections.

“I don’t know. That could happen later this year. That might not happen until next year,” he said.

President Trump told The Hill on Monday that Secretary Wright was mistaken.

“No, I think he’s wrong on that. Totally wrong,” he said, adding that he believed gas prices would fall quickly “as soon as this ends,” referring to the war.
