as posted by the channelPresident Trump said the Justice Department's new $1.8B fund to compensate victims of "weaponization and lawfare" would serve those who had been targeted by the Biden administration unfairly.
"Why should taxpayers pay for the January 6th-ers?" a reporter asked the president at a press conference Monday on health care affordability.
"This is reimbursing people who've been horribly treated," President Trump responded. "They've been, in some cases, imprisoned wrongly…And they turned out to be right."
The Justice Department has set up the fund in exchange for President Trump dropping his lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service, which he and his two sons had sued for failing to prevent a leak of their tax returns to the New York Times and ProPublica. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche will appoint a board of five members to oversee the fund, which will remunerate those who claim to have been targeted by the Biden administration for “political, personal or ideological reasons.”
Democrats have condemned the action as creating a slush fund from taxpayer dollars that would enrich Trump's allies, though the President and his sons have said they will not take money from it.
