0:31Now PlayingSenate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) called Dr. Anthony Fauci's refusal to answer questions before the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee "inexcusable" and said a contempt of Congress vote would be an "option" available to senators.
"Certainly, his answers today were completely inadequate, and I think that's an option that ought to be available to us," he told reporters Wednesday. "What he did today in front of that committee was inexcusable."
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), the committee's chair, said he planned to hold a contempt vote next week after the infectious disease expert invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and declined to answer questions from the panel about the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even if it's approved by the committee, the contempt resolution would require 60 votes in the full Senate, making its passage extremely unlikely.
