0:21Now PlayingPresident Trump claimed Friday that he would soon move to make the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory amid an escalating standoff with Iran over the critical waterway.
"Pretty soon, I will be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States," he said on Long Island, New York, while highlighting his administration’s efforts to combat crime. "Essentially, that's what it is. We have the blockade. No ships get through unless we want them to."
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi fired back Saturday, saying the strait "cannot be seized with a tweet, nor with an aircraft carrier, nor by issuing an order, nor through an election speech."
"The Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian," he wrote on social media. "This strait will only be closed and opened under Iran's command."
