0:44Now PlayingSen. Susan Collins (R-ME) called President Trump's new tariffs on Canada a "mistake," saying they would hurt American exports and raise costs.
"I really want us to go back to the very friendly, economically beneficial relationship that we have with our Canadian neighbors," she told reporters Saturday in Madison, Maine.
The new tariffs come after trade talks between the historically reliable trading partners collapsed last week, leading to U.S. tariffs on a range of Canadian goods. Ottawa has vowed to retaliate.
"I have voted repeatedly against the Canadian tariffs," Sen. Collins said. "This has been really up and down. Yesterday, I thought we had an agreement. This morning, I read that it had collapsed. So, who knows what tomorrow will bring, but I hope it will bring an agreement."
