"They assume that my ambition is positional," the New York Democrat told former Obama adviser David Axelrod at a University of Chicago event Friday. "They assume that my ambition is a title or a seat. And my ambition is way bigger than that. My ambition is to change this country."
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has drawn national attention since her 2018 run for Congress that unseated Rep. Joe Crowley, then the third-ranking Democrat in the House. Her progressive platform has made her a close ally of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), with whom she headlined a "Fighting Oligarchy" rally tour.
"Presidents come and go," Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said. "But single-payer health care is forever. A living wage is forever. Workers' rights are forever. Women's rights. All of that."
