In this breakdown, Pat Kahnke examines the viral debate where Eric Metaxas attempted to make a "Christian case for Donald Trump" — and accidentally confessed how shallow that case really is.
Metaxas admits he first saw Trump as a "short-fingered vulgarian," a cultural example of what not to be, and a man who "worshipped power." He called Trump's infamous John McCain attack — "I like people who weren't captured" — "the most despicable thing I've ever heard uttered in public life." So what changed his mind?
Bizarrely, Metaxas says it was writing a satirical piece for The New Yorker called "Trump Bible verses" mocking Trump's religious ignorance. In that process, he "found myself having an affection for this man" as a "New York original" and found Trump's angle "extremely entertaining." That affection — plus his love that Trump "angers and frightens the left so much they overreact" — became his conversion story.
Pat and Adam argue this is an embarrassingly shallow and vapid foundation for a Christian intellectual — reducing character to "mean tweets" while diminishing the absolute wickedness of policies grounded in a self-absorbed and vengeful character. It's the Fruit Test (Matthew 7:16) in real time: stated Christian values vs. documented behavior, and the classic MAGA seduction of trading moral substance for owning the libs.
