He felt threatened, police were nowhere to be found and that Marine was not the only one to attempt to subdue Neely (Neely had over 40 priors). See the story here
It’s a tough position to be in, if you are this Marine - knowing his intent was not to harm or kill anyone - it was to subdue and protect those that were in the area. NYC has a radical, activist D.A. (Alvin Bragg) who will do anything to appease the rabid, far left base. We are hopeful for a fair trial in a city (and a media) that is not friendly to the idea of self defense.
