A champion for Illinois’ families
Congresswoman Marie Newman is a champion for Illinois’ families who is running for reelection to expand economic opportunity and to fiercely defend our rights. An experienced leader, she is fighting to ensure that women and families are heard in the halls of power. She worked at one of the largest ad agencies in the country and rose to become a partner at age 31. Driven to tackle new challenges and innovate, she left to start her own business and established herself as a successful entrepreneur. The mother of a child who experienced severe bullying in school, Newman founded Team Up to Stop Bullying, a coalition of 70 nonprofits, and authored a solutions-focused book to encourage anti-bullying policies and promote inclusion in schools across the country. After many years of volunteering on campaigns, she stepped up to run for the first time after the 2016 election to defend the fundamental rights so many Americans can no longer take for granted. She mounted a formidable campaign for Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District in 2018 and lost by a narrow margin. Rep. Newman stepped up to run again in 2020 against anti-choice incumbent Dan Lipinski and won.
An experienced leader running to protect rights and expand opportunities
Since her election to Congress, Rep. Newman has been a progressive champion working to expand economic opportunity for all Illinois families and to create good-paying jobs that strengthen communities. “We finally need to address ‘everybody’s everyday’ to drive innovation and invest in our people, infrastructure, mass transportation, jobs, training, and growing an ever greener economy,” she has said. As a former small business owner, Rep. Newman understands what it takes to help grow an economy that works for all. She has also been a staunch defender for abortion rights, access to high quality health care, LGBTQ+ protections, and voting rights. Illinois families need a leader they can count on to defend their rights and expand economic opportunities, and Congresswoman Newman is that leader.
An opportunity to reelect a progressive champion
Congresswoman Newman is running a strong campaign focused on the needs of the community where she has lived all her life. Despite redistricting, Rep. Newman is ready to serve the Chicago suburbs in Congress. This is a tough race for a newly drawn district that includes a plurality of voters from her old district. This will be a tough primary, but we’ve seen her take on tough primary battles before. In 2020, Rep. Newman challenged incumbent Congressman Dan Lipinski, a Democrat who was a longtime opponent of reproductive rights. He repeatedly voted for dangerous abortion bans and to defund Planned Parenthood, voted against the Affordable Care Act, and supported a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Despite taking on an incumbent, Newman’s grassroots campaign was victorious in the 2020 Democratic primary and general election. Now, she is ready to do it again to remain in Congress and continue her fight to protect equality, rights, and Illinois’ families.
