Shahid Buttar is an advocate that has fought for the future for 20 years, not a politician that seeks popularity over principles. When defending communities, challenging corruption, and establishing new rights, he has taken positions unpopular at the time:

When he fought for LGBTQ marriage equality in 2004, it wasn’t popular.

When he organized direct action to stop Bush’s wars, it wasn’t always popular.

When he challenged Obama’s administration as a non-profit leader defending civil liberties from a bipartisan assault, it was not popular among many Democrats.

And when he challenged the most powerful Democrat in Congress in 2018 and 2020, it was certainly not popular among supporters of her party.

The climate crisis, emergent authoritarianism, and white supremacy are all the results of indefensible policy choices by a Congress composed of millionaires. The class war they have waged on working families across the United States demands accountability. The future we all share demands our solidarity.

We're building momentum.

In 2020, we won more votes to replace Nancy Pelosi than any challenge she has ever faced in the 34 years she has held her seat in Congress. We overcame a global pandemic, a corporate media whiteout, a 15:1 fundraising deficit, and an attempted character assassination by Democratic Party operatives wielding disinformation and amplifying racist & Islamophobic dogwhistles.

The 81,000 votes we won were not enough to liberate her seat—but our momentum helped move half a dozen policies through the House over Pelosi’s initial objections, by forcing changes in her positions on issues from worker rights to civil rights, funding the U.S. Postal Service, and impeaching Trump.

Shahid has been building

social movements and speaking

truth to power for nearly two decades.

Since graduating from Stanford Law School in 2003, Shahid has worked in both San Francisco and Washington as a legal advocate, a non-profit leader, a grassroots organizer, and a poet & musician.

His wide-ranging work reflects a commitment to intersectional feminism, democratic socialism, and international human rights. His passions have long aligned around a common purpose: building the movement to put human rights and human needs before corporate profits.

An early advocate for marriage equality for same-sex couples and a prolific organizer in the movement to end warrantless government surveillance, Shahid most recently built a national grassroots network for the Electronic Frontier Foundation as the organization’s Director of Grassroots Advocacy.

In addition to LGBTQ rights, privacy, and the right to encryption, Shahid’s work has also advanced immigrant rights, campaign finance reform, government transparency, international human rights, and police accountability. His writing has explored issues from the right-wing attack on reproductive freedom to the erosion of voting rights, and from effective counter-terrorism strategies to examples of counter-cultural activism promoting progressive politics at the intersection of art and organizing.

After growing immersed in the movement to end the war, Shahid moved to Washington to work for Heller Ehrman LLP, a San Francisco-based law firm that later collapsed during the 2008 financial crisis.

As a national non-profit leader, he built a national progressive legal network at the American Constitution Society while in Washington to help correct the conservative bias increasingly pervading the federal courts.

Since joining the SF-based Electronic Frontier Foundation in 2015, Shahid envisioned and launched a national grassroots network, represented the organization in the media and at public events from coast-to-coast, and frequently wrote for public audiences to explain the implications of EFF’s commitment to digital rights for policy issues from mass surveillance and encryption to net neutrality and restrictions on police.
