Unite Your Suffering to Christ’s Passion

n today’s homily, Fr. Scott Foley reminds us of a profound mystery of our faith: our sufferings, both great and small, can be united to the Passion of Christ. When we offer them with love, they become more than burdens to endure—they become redemptive. The Cross is not only Christ’s victory; it is also the place where our wounds can be transformed into prayer and grace.

A consoling truth of Catholic teaching is that even our past sufferings can be offered to God. Nothing is wasted in Christ. What once felt meaningless or unbearable can, in His hands, become powerful intercession. We can unite these sufferings to the Cross and choose one intention for which they are offered. In this way, the most difficult moments of our lives bear fruit for the salvation of souls.

And in this offering, we are not alone. The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Sorrowful Mother, who stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross, grieves with us and for us. She understands our pain, intercedes for us, and prays that our sufferings united to Christ may become instruments of mercy. When we bring our crosses to her Son, she is always there beside us, helping us to offer everything to Him.

If you carry a heavy cross today—or wounds from the past—know that through Christ and with Mary, nothing is wasted. Every sorrow can be transformed into love.
